UK Graduates face difficult time ahead explain TiES International Teacher Recruitment
A new report published by Market Research firm High Fliers focuses on the difficulties faced by many graduates in the current economic climate.
Their study claims that due to economic downturn the City, and in particular the investment banking sector had close to a 50% reduction in the number of graduate jobs they were offering.
It has also been suggested that some companies are restricting their recruitment to a small number of top universities only.
The job market for graduates has been relatively secure for the past twenty years therefore students beginning their academic courses at university would have no reason to fear a lack of job at the end. Now thousands of students are left wondering what the future holds for them.
The number of graduates leaving university this year without a job is compounded by the numbers who graduated in 2008 and have still not managed to find a suitable position.
In June of 2008 the General Teaching Council of Scotland announced that of the 3,300 teachers who qualified last year nearly 50% were in part time work, short teaching contracts or had no teaching job at all.
What is to be done to prevent this huge waste of talent?
The UK Government announced the possibility of offering some graduates a three month paid internship. Some students have already been on internships and are still without a job.
John Denham, the Skills Secretary, said that the scheme would incorporate up to three months' paid work experience. He revealed that four well-known companies, including Microsoft and Barclays, have agreed to take part.
While the internships will not pay a full salary, pay levels will be set slightly above the combined total that a student would earn in that time from a grant and a loan. This means that the interns' income will not suffer.
The minister justified the scheme saying, "they [new graduates] will be a very big group. We can't just leave people to fend for themselves."
He added that he hopes the placements will lead to permanent positions. He said, "at the end they will be more employable, and some of them will get jobs."
