New Cambridge International Primary School Planned - BVU
PUNE: The Bharati Vidyapeeth University (BVU) announced on Monday its move to launch an international school that will offer the Cambridge international primary programme in Dubai, starting in September this year.
Simultaneously, BVU's offshore centre at Ras Al Khaima (RAK), one of the seven emirates in the UAE, will go functional in September with full-time degree courses in business administration, computer application and masters in business administration.
"We have all the requisite legal as well as academic clearances from the UAE as well as the Indian authorities for the school and the offshore centre," declared BVU vice-chancellor Shivajirao Kadam. Dubai-based well-known NRI businessman B R Shetty, who operates a chain of hospitals and pharmaceutical units across the UAE, is the BVU's local partner for facilitating its academic programmes.
Referring to the school project, Kadam said, "We have acquired a 76,000 sq ft newly-constructed facility located at a short distance away from the Dubai international airport." The BVU has appointed a full-time principal and other academic staff at this school and the admissions too have started.
"We are beginning with the primarily level programme and will gradually grow to the Cambridge O' (Std X) and A' (Std XII) level qualifications," said Kadam.
The BVU had initially announced plans to set up an offshore centre at the Dubai International Academic City (DIAC). However, the plan could not come through on account of technical issues at the Dubai end and the BVU had to shift to the RAK.
"The RAK authorities have extended five acres of land in the free zone to us for establishing our offshore centre," Kadam said. "A government constructed building adjacent to this land has been acquired by the BVU to start the BBA, BCA and MBA programmes from academic year 2009-10, starting in September."
The BVU, which has its footprints in Sangli, Pune, Mumbai and New Delhi with 32 academic and three research institutions (offering 211 degree, PG and doctoral programmes), will celebrate its 14th foundation day on April 26.
Speaking to reporters, Kadam said that apart from Dubai and RAK initiatives, the BVU was launching a Centre for Health Administration and Research (CHAR) at its Katraj-Dhankawdi campus in the city. "The new centre will offer two inter-disciplinary masters degree programmes in health administration and geoinformatics," he said.
According BVU director for health sciences V N Karandikar, the demand for professionals, who can handle medical-related tasks including administration, law, human resources, bio-medical waste management etc, has been on the rise in the health sector. "This calls for specialised courses to roll out health care professionals," he said.
"The M.Sc (health administration) will be a two-year programme with a student intake of 30 each batch," he said. "We expect the students mainly as working people from the existing hospitals." The geoinformatics programme, on the other hand, will focus on the study of the impact of climate and environmental changes on human health, Karandikar added.
