Independent Schools close in UK

Up to 30 independent schools in th UK have closed or are due to close in the coming months because of the economic climate, a teaching union has said. And the number of private schools making redundancies was "running into hundreds", the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) claimed. The ATL said some schools had no redundancy policy and the closures had exposed managerial weaknesses.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Course slowly gaining A-level ground in the UK

The International Baccalaureate started 40 years ago in Geneva and with it a message of broader and more self-motivated education. However, within the UK the uptake has been very slow and even today the number of schools that have adopted the IB still totals only 137 with most running in conjunction with current A-levels.

New 'English City' planned for Korea

Tens of thousands of Korean children are studying English overseas. Jeju Island seeks to attract these children to a new English town to be built on the island. The first ever English education 'city' is now under construction in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si, a project to be completed by 2013 at an estimated cost of 785 billion won.

Teachers in UK Scotland recruited from overseas

A local authority in UK Scotland is recruiting teachers from abroad to tackle a problem with filling vacancies at its most rural schools. Aberdeenshire Council - which advertised more than 100 posts in Novemebr last year (2008) - said it that over half were teachers from overseas. Highland Council also revealed five of its 16 advertised posts had been vacant for more than three months.

UK Private schools urged to accept bigger classes to keep fees down

David Hanson, IAPS Chief Executive, and John Tranmer, Chairman-Elect and Headmaster of The Froebelian School, Leeds were quoted in article in The Times on 10 January 2009 that private schools should consider increasing class sizes to keep fees down as the credit crisis bites. Instead schools and parents should focus on the quality of the teaching and learning in prep schools and not on small class sizes.
